Have you heard…?!?! The state of the insurance market in the US SUCKS right now. But, here’s what you can do about it:
First of all, get proactive about things you know are going to be a problem either for resale of your home or when it comes time to renew your policy (too many people are getting dropped right now because they aren’t doing these things)…
- Replace knob and tube wiring or old, fire-risk electrical panels
- Replace galvanized pipes
- Consider a roof upgrade, if yours is at the end of its life
- For fire-risk properties: work with your local fire department to complete their fire readiness checklist
And, then, there’s the issue of claims…. I know this is going to sound CRAZY, but: When you’re about to make a claim, STOP and consider if you should pay it out of pocket instead.
Until things get better (hopefully in 2025), think of using insurance in truly worst case scenarios. (Pro Tip: increasing your deductible could help reduce your annual premium!)
